TYPES OF EXAMINATIONS PERFORMED BY CSD SRL - NDT LABORATORY:

Ultrasonic examination

Basic principle is based on reflecting the ultrasonic wave touching the internal discontinuity surface and/or the opposite side of the examining piece. The practical side of the method allows the detection of the internal discontinuities regardless of their generating causes, shape, depth or space orientation.

Ultrasonic examination can be applied on butt and fillet welds, base materials for pipes and sheets , forgings and castings. The materials suitable for examination are steel and steel alloys (except some type of austenitic steels), gray cast iron, bronze and aluminum alloys, and polyethylene pieces.

The revealed indications consist of fissures, lack of melting, lack of penetration, stratifications and plane sliding, included slag (gas or metallic), marginal ditching etc.

Ultrasonic thickness measurement

Ultrasonic measurement can be applied on the pipe and plate base materials or the forgings and castings. Thus the following materials can be measured: steel and steel alloys, cast iron, bronze alloys, aluminum alloys, and polyethylene pieces.

Thickness measurements are based on the ultrasonic wave reflection touching the opposite side of the examination piece.

Magnetic particles testing

The magnetic particles method is applied for detecting fissures and other discontinuities on the surface or near the surface of the ferromagnetic materials. Maximal method sensibility is recorded on the surface discontinuities, decreasing rapidly on deeper levels. Typical discontinuities that can be detected using this method consist of: fissures, marginal ditching, lack of melting, throttling defects and porosities.

Basically the method consists of magnetizing the examination surface and applying the magnetic particles (the examination medium) on the surface. The magnetic particles will then form surface contours where the fissures or other discontinuities are producing magnetic field distortion.


Penetrant liquids testing

The penetrant liquids testing is efficient for detecting open discontinuities on the non-porous metals and other materials. Typical discontinuities detected by this method are fissures, marginal ditching, lack of melting, throttling defects and pores.

The basic method is the following: the penetrating liquid is applied on the examination surface and it is allowed to soak in the discontinuities. The excessive content of penetrating liquid is then removed, followed by the drying up of the surface and the application of the developer. The developer works as an absorbing material for the penetrating liquid left in the discontinuities and as a hard background for a better indication visibility.

 

Eddy currents examination can be applied in both highlighting the flaws as well as changes in surface structure after thermo-mechanical-chemical treatments.
